When someone’s Colorado driver license is suspended, or revoked because they have been convicted of driving under the influence (DUI), DUID, or for another reason, such as having too many points on their record, he or she must go through the proper steps to restore their driving privilege. However, one cannot reinstate their driving privilege until all of the conditions of their suspension or revocation have been satisfied.
Let’s take a look at the difference between a driver license suspension and a revocation. According to the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles, a suspension is “a temporary withdrawal of the driving privilege. A suspension is a restraint action but does not void the driver license. A valid license may be re-issued upon reinstatement.”
A revocation on the other hand, is “a mandatory restraint on a valid driver license or driving privilege. A revoked license is invalid and cannot be re-issued. After reinstatement of your driving privilege you may be required to re-test (both written and drive) to be issued a new license,” according to the Division of Motor Vehicles.
Getting Your License Back
Has your Colorado license been suspended or revoked for any reason? As previously mentioned, you will have to satisfy all of the conditions for the suspension or revocation before it can be re-instated. Assuming all conditions have been met, you’ll need to visit your local Driver License Office and pay a $95 reinstatement fee.
Depending on the reason for the suspension or revocation, you may need to provide other paperwork, such as an SR-22 financial liability certificate (for DUI cases), or evidence that you have current liability insurance – these types of documentation.
Note: If your driver license is suspended as part of a criminal court case, such as DUI, please be aware that the driver license suspension or revocation is separatefrom the court case and in order to regain your driving privileges, you have to follow the Division of Motor Vehicles’ procedures to make that happen.
