Common Causes of Distracted Driving Accidents

|

In recent years, distracted driving has become one of the most common causes of car accidents. According to the 2019 crash report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,142 people died in collisions involving distracted drivers.

Distracted driving means operating a vehicle while performing another activity that takes your eyes off the road, your hands off the steering wheel, and/or your attention away from the primary task of driving. Being distracted for only a few seconds can still cover a considerable distance of road – as if you are driving blind.

The following are the most common causes of distracted driving accidents:

  • Smartphones – Cellphones have become an important part of our lives, whether you wish to communicate with loved ones, perform work duties, share photos or videos on social media, or keeping up with current events. Unfortunately, many people continue to text, talk, or otherwise use their smartphones while behind the wheel, which has led to a significant number of distracted driving accidents. Not only is it wise to put down your smartphone while driving, but it is also the law.

  • Passengers – It is only natural to talk to whoever is in your vehicle. However, sometimes people become too engaged in a conversation, causing a driver to take his/her mind away from the road. Try to keep your focus on driving and avoid turning your head to look at the passenger.

  • Adjusting car controls – Whether you are trying to find a song or the right interior temperature, what may seem like a minor task can take your attention away from driving. Whenever you come to a stop on the road, take this opportunity to adjust your car settings.

  • Eating and drinking – While many people eat and drink while driving all the time, what happens when an unexpected traffic condition occurs? Without the use of both hands, you may have less time to react to such situations.

  • Grooming – From applying makeup and combing your hair to brushing and flossing your teeth, many people believe grooming while driving saves them time during their morning commute or before an important appointment. Yet, similar to eating and drinking, not having the use of both hands can spell trouble.

  • Spacing out – Daydreaming and zoning out during a long drive or while driving familiar roads can also lead to a serious crash.
